✨ GENTLE DETOX PRACTICES I LEARNED THROUGH MY MTHFR JOURNEY ✨
When I was diagnosed with MTHFR gene mutation, I discovered my body needed extra support with detoxification. But rather than extreme protocols, I found that simple, gentle, consistent practices made the biggest difference in how I felt day to day.
Here are five accessible detox practices that have been game changers in my journey:
1. Epsom Salt Baths
The magnesium sulfate in Epsom salts supports gentle detoxification through the skin while also replenishing magnesium levels (something many of us are deficient in). These baths have been especially helpful for removing heavy metals, which was crucial in my recovery.
How to: Add 2 cups of Epsom salts to warm bath water and soak for 20 minutes, 1-2 times weekly. For enhanced benefits, add a few drops of lavender essential oil.
2. Castor Oil Packs
This ancient remedy supports liver detoxification and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. I noticed significant improvements in my digestion and energy levels when I incorporated this practice.
How to: Soak a piece of flannel cloth in castor oil, place it over your liver area (right side under ribs), cover with a hot water bottle or heating pad, and rest for 20-30 minutes. This can be done 2-3 times weekly.
3. Dry Brushing
This practice stimulates the lymphatic system (crucial for detox), removes dead skin cells, and improves circulation. It's been a wonderful addition to my daily routine and takes just a few minutes.
How to: Use a natural bristle brush and brush toward your heart in gentle circular motions, starting from your feet and working upward. Always brush on dry skin before showering. IF this is painful, that means you really need it!
4. Hydration with Lemon
Simple but effective—starting the day with warm water and fresh lemon supports liver function, aids digestion, and provides a gentle flush of toxins. And, who am I kidding, I only drink water with lemon now. *pro-tip: buy the Santa Cruz Organic lemon juice so you don't have to juice all them lemons!!
How to: Squeeze half a fresh lemon into warm (not hot) water first thing in the morning, before food or other beverages.
5. Mindful Product Swaps
One of the most significant ways I've reduced my toxic load is by gradually replacing conventional products with cleaner alternatives. Rather than overwhelming yourself with a complete overhaul, try replacing one product monthly.
How to: Start with the products that stay on your skin longest (moisturizers, serums) or cover the largest area (body lotions, soaps). Read labels carefully and avoid "fragrance" as it can hide hundreds of chemicals.
These practices are gentle enough for daily life but powerful when done consistently. Remember that supporting detoxification is about consistent small choices, not perfection or extreme measures.
